No need for queuing up at the reception desk

Sometimes when you are staying at a hotel you can't wait to get to your room and chill out, but the long queues at the check-in desk often leave you restless and agitated. However, a new scheme being piloted by one company could mean waiting for room entry could soon become a thing of the past.

Travelers who want instant access to their room can download an app onto their phone which will allow them to unlock a pre-designated hotel door. By calling the number on the confirmation email and then holding their phone to a sensor, the entrance will open.

Only smartphones are capable of using this method currently, although the app will also work on other phones.

The scheme is being tested by two Holiday Inns in the US next month. The InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), who owns the hotels, is hoping this pioneering idea will speed up the process and eliminate disgruntled customers spending ages checking in at reception.

Bryson Koehler, IHG executive said: "The proliferation of smartphones is growing in such a way that we have to look at what people are already bringing with them to make their stay more enjoyable."

The Holiday Inn Chicago O' Hare Rosemont and the Holiday Inn Express Houston Downtown Convention Centre will be trialing the instant check-in for the next couple of months.

If you think you are being held back on latest technological advancements because you don't have a smartphone, trade in your old phone for cash and buy a more versatile handset.
