It has been reported that Google is launching its own branded mobile phone for an ‘all-out assault’ on the mobile phone industry. Google would offer its own branded handset and the first comprehensive Google phone service with unlimited free calls and a built-in, advanced version of Google Voice.
Interestingly, Google would be the first company that will control everything relating to a mobile phone - from the software in users’ phones to the services they use to make calls and access the internet.
According to a report from ‘The Times’: “The Googlephone promises to be one of the most advanced smartphones, with a large touchscreen display and a processor almost twice as fast as the one powering Apple’s iPhone 3G.”
Additionally, it would be first phone to run the latest version of Google’s Android software called Flan. This would enable Google to offer high-speed 3-D gaming, which is said to be as good as that of many handheld consoles.
To offer end-to-end phone service, Google acquired a small company called Gizmo5, also known as the Gizmo Project, which had developed technology to connect Google Voice with voice-over-internet (VOIP) networks.
Ashok Kumar, an analyst at Northeast Securities, commented that the Google-branded phone will be built by the Taiwanese phone maker HTC, and Qualcomm will incorporate a processor for this smartphone.
Experts are predicting that the Googlephone will be launched in the US by early 2010.
