Tesco Clubcard holders may be looking at the option of trading in their old mobile phones to upgrade to an Apple iPhone, after Tesco revealed an application for its Clubcard loyalty scheme is available to download on the device.
With the apps market growing increasingly popular since the smartphone boom at the turn of the century, Tesco is keen to keep up with technological changes.
The Tesco Clubcard app allows the user to store their Clubcard on the phone in the form of a virtual barcode by entering their loyalty card details on starting the application for the first time. The device can then be used at checkouts in most Tesco stores. The barcode appears quickly once the app is activated replacing the need for the traditional Clubcard.
The head of research and development at Tesco, Nick Lansley said: “We intend to do lots more with this app in the future, including display your points balance”.
“We’re even looking at finding ways of bringing e-vouchers straight to your Clubcard app so you can use them at the checkout directly from your phone”, he added.
Tesco have said that at present Clubcard credit card numbers cannot currently be loaded into the app, however this is likely to change over the next 6 to 8 weeks. Tesco are also planning to introduce similar apps for both Nokia and Blackberry phones in the future but no timescales have been put into place.
The Tesco Clubcard app is available to download for free at the Apple app store.
