Mobile phone recycling

Leading an environmentally friendly lifestyle is something that more and more people and companies are striving towards. As a new solar-powered mobile phone is announced consumers may be encouraged to trade in their handsets for the new device.

Sagem Wireless has teamed up with PUMA to create a new mobile phone simply called, the PUMA phone. The new handheld was unveiled in Barcelona at the 2010 Mobile World Congress show. The large German Puma company seems set on extending their roots from sportswear manufacturing to telecoms.

The new mobile distinguishes itself from the pack with several features; most notably a built-in solar charger on the back which allows the user some extra time when the batteries are low provided they can catch some sunlight.

The handset also comes with a 2.8-inch touchscreen, a 3.2-megapixel camera with LED flash, a VGA camera on the front for video calls and USB/Bluetooth/HSPA connectivity. A few sports related gadgets have also been coupled in including a pedometer, a GPS tracker, a yachting compass, and a stopwatch.

Apps including an audio player with a turntable, an animated puma (called Dylan), and countdowns showing how many songs you can play “powered by the sun” have all been included. Along with the simple interface with user-friendly menus, it is easy to see that the phone is more about fun rather than business.

The PUMA phone is expected to be available from the first week of April. However, there are no details on pricing just yet.
