New mobile phone app

The Department of Health has introduced an interactive mobile phone application to address the issue of excessive drinking. Public Health Minister and city MP Gillian Merron has launched this new service with an aim to decrease binge-drinking over the festive season.

This application can be downloaded for free from iTunes for iPhone and www.nhs.uk for Windows phones. This application would enable users to get a personalised chart of the consumption level to keep a check on if someone is drinking too much.

The Department of Health is concerned about excessive drinking over Christmas and its long term implications as it has been proved that excessive drinking leads to a range of health problems and disease.

Ms Merron commented: "It is all too easy to lose track of how much you drink. So as the festive parties start to build up, this innovative tool will help people keep tabs on their drinking, wherever they are.”

She further emphasised that - "It's one of many ways the Government is helping people understand how much they are drinking. Sticking within the NHS recommended limits means you reduce the risk of serious conditions such as mouth cancer and strokes."

This initiative on mobile phones is a part of the government's £9m ‘Know Your Limits’ marketing campaign which is an effort towards awareness of safer drinking.
