Something new is coming
Whilst 3G continues to grow within the UK, a much faster network is being tested: 4G! Sprint started to set up a 4G network in September of 2008 using a WiMax network in Baltimore. What can we expect from this Fourth-Generation Communications System?
Speed
First of all, the speed peaks at 10 Mb per second with an average speed of 3 Mb per second to 5 Mb per second, which is about 5 times faster than the current 3G network's speed. Users of the 4G network will be able to download dvd-5 content in just a few minutes and stream high-definition television.
Access
The 4G network of Sprint can already be accessed, but it only covers a few of the larger cities in the USA. Sprint is planning to have 17 additional markets by the end of 2009. There are yet no dates for starting a 4G network in Europe.
4G phones
The Samsung Mondi is currently the only mobile phone which supports the 4G network, but only a few people are able to use it. If the amount of markets rise, manufacturers will be more likely to develop mobile phones which support the 4G network. This is, however, a long time off.
Until then
Until the introduction of 4G in Europe, we will have to stick to 3G, which is not bad at all. Almost every modern phone supports it, and the 3G network is about to cover all areas of the UK, which makes it likely for everyone to consider buying a new mobile phone.
